baring life and lifestyle
in the non-place

MONOTHEMATIC PUBLICATION

beyond a secluded and exclusive infrastructure, non-places are also plagued by their distinctive sameness
— Sarah Sharma

Sarah Sharma’s cultural studies essay “Baring Life and Lifestyle in the
Non-place”, approaches the idea of spaces of transit within our society, such as airport terminals, being locations focused on mediated consumption and where people lose their individuality, becoming dislocated and anonymous beings.

This publication explores the concept of “the distinctive sameness of the non-place”, aiming to communicate the disorienting nature of such a location, due to its lack of reference points. The ‘sameness’ of a non-place impairs people’s perceptions, leaving them feeling lost, not just within their environments, but within themselves.
